The DMS Wants to Know!

Monday's Riddle was cryptic, and Lizzy's review of The Klipfish Code by Mary Casanova cracked the code. Thursday on Top of the Heap, we told you about two interesting types of code, and Friday, it was awesome to chat with Timothy Davis about his ocean adventure Sea Cutter: Book 1 in The Chronicles of Nathaniel Childe. Stop by the post and enter to win a copy of this exciting middle grade book- giveaway ends Sunday, August 4th. Today, we want to hear from you!

The DMS Wants to Know:
Have you ever sent anyone a message in secret code? What type of code did you use?

We'll tell you ours, if you tell us yours!

  1. I can't type the code we used to use but when I was a child we used to send each other secret messages all the time (with friends & school friends.) We drew a grid like o's and x's and another like a big 'x' and filled the spaces with the alphabet - 2 to a space. The code was the shape of the 'box' the letter was in with a dot in the shape for the 2nd letter. (Does anyone recognise it after all this??) It would be so much easier if I could show you!

    1. Sharon- I don't think I know that code- but I plan to try it out. It sounds so cool! :) I think it is great that you remember it after all this time. :) ~L

  2. Interesting post. I used to love reading Enid Blyton's The Famous Five, and it always had secret codes. I enjoyed it!

  3. We used to use code back in elementary school to send notes between a few friends :) I read about doing so in a book at one point and thought it was an awesome idea. My friends, a little less so, but they played along, haha! Now if I could just remember how we did the code--something like a number/letter shift I think...

    1. Meradeth- I love that you and your friends uses a secret code in your notes. Imagine finding one of your old notes and trying to figure out what it says. :) Thanks for sharing! :) ~L

  4. No but I remember the children at the play scheme were I worked devising their own verbal 'secret' code that had to be the worse kept secret ever. Broken within an hour, it took the children longer to realise we knew of their plans because we understood the code.

    1. Petty- I think you are right! Adults are usually pretty quick to figure out the codes children used. I bet the children were shocked that you figured out what they were up to! :) ~L

  6. I think my sisters and I tried writing a secret letter in lemon juice once. We read somewhere that it could be read in either darkness or with a luminous torch. (Nope, it can't.)

    1. Claudine- How fun that you tried to write with lemon juice. I tried it once too! I think the lemon juice has to be VERY thick or very wet. I tried it over a light bulb and eventually the message came through- but I think there are safer methods of secret writing. :) ~L
