Monday's Riddle: In Need of a Bigger Box!

Hello Riddlers! It's that time again. Can you guess our theme this week? I was astounded the first time I was near one. ; ) ~ F

I'm big and powerful, but I like to sleep. I pay no mind to counting sheep. I protect my pride with style and grace, though sometimes I choose my own pace. King I am, and I'll stand my ground; should I leap, there's no sound. I've a mane of gold and eyes like the sun- most of my kind think boxes are fun. So, if you see me someplace near, please don't worry, and have no fear. I'll be resting in the shade, waiting for the day to fade. Just know that when twilight's here, I can see you crystal clear. This is when you must take care, for when I'm hungry, all beware.

What am I?

I gave you a clue!

Summer Starts!

This week has been all about the summer solstice. We made it through a long winter in New England, and the warmth and sun are certainly reasons to celebrate! Everyone has those certain things they do to kick off the sunny season, so here are a few of our summertime favorites! Enjoy. :)

In the time when things expand, and worlds bubble to life, magic abounds."

We always know summer's just around the corner when Harry Potter takes over Professor Robinson's classroom. The party is always a blast, and we know Fred and George would be proud.

This year, the winner of the Harry Potter trivia game was RAVENCLAW! Congratulations, smarty pants. ;)

Here are a few summery pictures to get you in the mood. :)

And, love from the animals...

What Will Happen on the Summer Solstice?

Seth and Kendra are sent to stay with their Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson while their parents go away on vacation. They have never been to their grandparents’ house and are very intrigued when they pull up and see all the “beware” and “keep out” signs. After they get settled in and their grandfather explains the rules of the house to them, he makes it clear they are not allowed in the woods. It doesn't take long before Seth begins exploring the forbidden woods, but what he finds scares him, and he gets Kendra to go in the woods with him. Seth's rule breaking doesn’t stop there. Kendra sticks to the rules, but after spying milk being placed around the property, she gets Seth to take a sip. What he sees makes her curious and she tries the milk too. A whole new world of magical creatures is revealed to them when they drink the milk and their grandfather tells them they are staying at Fablehaven, a sanctuary for magical creatures. When the summer solstice comes, their grandfather is very nervous to have children in the house, as it’s a night for all the magical beasts to come and frolic; anything can happen. Will Seth and Kendra obey their grandfather’s rule for the special night? What will they see and hear when the beasts begin flocking to Fablehaven? What can happen on Midsummer’s Eve? If a rule gets broken, how bad could it be? You’ll have to read this nail biting adventure to find out what happens to Seth, Kendra and the cast of characters in this amazing book.

When I read Fablehaven by Brandon Mull I was captivated by the story. Of course, getting to know Kendra and Seth made the adventure even more fun because the brother and sister have such a great relationship and their personalities are unique.  Although I could relate more to Kendra, I did enjoy Seth’s character and his rule breaking kept me wondering what would happen next. I love stories that involve fairies, goblins, trolls, and other magical creatures, so the idea behind the book was very intriguing to me. I never thought about a place for magical beasts before and the world that was created was fascinating to explore. I liked figuring out the lessons that each character learned in the book and it made me start imagining the world I can’t see around me. I would recommend this book for kids in fourth grade and up who enjoy fantasy and adventure. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series!

Has anyone else read Fablehaven? Or have you read another book by Brandon Mull? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Happy reading!

Answer to Monday's Riddle: Summer Dreams...

Excellent guessing Riddlers! We couldn't be happier to be celebrating summer, and we're looking forward to the fair weather days ahead. Lizzy's review will walk you right into the magic, and Friday, we'll tell you about some of our favorite summertime rituals. See you all around the book block. ; ) ~ F

A celebration's on its way! The sun's up high, ready to play. A time to grow, expand and bloom. The colors unite; the plants need room. Druids celebrate this time of season because the light brings rhyme and reason. Eggs standing on the table have been known to be a common fable. The longest day's yet to come, and most are in for outdoor fun. It's a fairer stitch in Nature's seam, as she sews the fabric of Summer's dream.

What am I referring to? Answer: Summer Solstice
