Living in a
small community on the moon sounds like it would be awesome. But Dashiell
Gibson thinks that there are a lot of things lacking about Moon Base Alpha. The
fact that his family will be on the moon for the next three years doesn't make
the day-to-day boringness of it all seem any better. There is only one other kid
Dash’s age and even though they’re friends, they probably wouldn't be that
close down on Earth because their interests are too different. Sleeping
arrangements are tight and the bathroom is a hassle. It’s a long walk when Dash
gets up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but the conversation he
overhears Dr. Holtz having on the phone intrigues him. The next morning the
lunarnauts (or Moonies) are told that one of the scientists, Dr. Holtz, died accidentally.
After what he witnessed in the bathroom Dash is sure it was a murder. No one believes him and it starts to look
like a cover up is taking place. Is it possible to find out if there's a
traitor on the moon? Did Dr. Holtz have any enemies and could they be on the
moon? Is Dash onto something or is he losing it? Put together the pieces
of the puzzle to find out!
Space Case by Stuart Gibbs is an interesting book that takes place in the future. Anyone who has ever thought it would be fun to live somewhere else in the solar system will enjoy this book. I think it's a great book for kids in fourth grade and up who like adventure, science, and history. Dash is a smart boy with a good sense of humor. He's easy to relate to and would make a good friend. The story has a lot of mystery to it and there were definitely parts when I was nervous about what was going to happen. I don’t think living on the moon would be as easy as I imagined before reading this book. I look forward to the next book in the series.
