Margo's Musings: A Thirst for Home

Margo's taking over Lizzy's Review today because she's found a new book she can't wait to share with you. A Thirst for Home by Christine Ieronimo is now in bookstores everywhere! This beautifully illustrated children's picture book opens a window into the world for young readers, showing the connections we all share with each other. Through the eyes of a little girl called Alemitu, you see and feel the gift of a mother's love, and how strong the bonds of kindness hold. The story is elegantly written and the illustrations are inspired. Alemitu's journey will take you across worlds and leave you looking deeper into the well.

A Thirst for Home was just released in May! This is definitely a book to share with your whole family. Margo was enraptured by Alemitu's story, and she's been telling everyone how important it is to remember that we're all the same, and we all get thirsty.

Alemitu lives with her mother in a poor village in Ethiopia, where she must walk miles for water and hunger roars in her belly. Even though life is difficult, she dreams of someday knowing more about the world. When her mother has no choice but to leave her at an orphanage to give her a chance at a better life, an American family adopts Alemitu. She becomes Eva in her new home in America, and although her life there is better in so many ways, she’ll never forget her homeland and the mother who gave up so much for her. Told through the lens that water connects all people everywhere, this eye-opening, emotional story will get readers thinking about the world beyond their own.

  1. Awesome. I recently read a MG book that really pulled me into the head of a 12 year old. I love seeing through other people's eyes, and especially when they come from a different culture. Such an amazing experience.

  2. This sounds like a real winner. There was a discussion on a blog recently about an article someone in publishing had written stating people would not buy books with a black child on the cover. I'd like to know how someone could pass this one by! What a gorgeous cover! Thanks for telling me about this book.

    1. Thank you for hitting the nail on the head. Although I highlight the importance of clean water and how it connects us all over the world, my true inspiration was my daughter's courageous and selfless mother. It is a tribute to her immeasurable love!
