The DMS Wants to Know!

This week we have been discussing diversity in people. Monday's Riddle clued you in on the theme, and Lizzy reviewed the middle grade novel, The Thing About Georgie by Lisa Graff. We all have things about us that make us unique and set us apart from everyone else. Some qualities we are happy about and some parts of ourselves we work to overcome, like Percy Jackson and Remus Lupin, two colorful characters that we spotlighted on Top of the Heap. Friday, we were excited to host middle grade R.J. Palacio, and find out a little more about Auggie's amazing story. Today, we want to know what sets you apart in a crowd?

The DMS wants to know: What makes you unique? (character trait, physical attribute, etc.).

We'll tell you ours, if you tell us yours!

  1. Interesting question. My hair is a very unique color red. When I was younger, I did not like having red hair, as it made me a very obvious target, like a big red dot in a crowd. I remember wishing everyday for just a regular color like everyone else. When I was old enough, I dyed my hair brown and found that I hated it. Once I accepted that my hair was red, it turned out that I actually really like it as a part of me.

  3. I think one thing that is unique about me is that no one can ever figure out what my heritage is. People see me and think I am Hispanic, Asian, Italian, etc. They are all wrong! I think it is unique because so many people think they can tell who you are by looking at you, but it just goes to show that you can't.

    1. Flex- How cool! It sounds like your heritage probably sparks some interesting conversations. I agree with you- that you can't look at someone and make judgments. ~F

  5. I'm not sure this is unique, but most people think I'm very serious, then say they're surprised by my standup comedic side that pops out once in a while. I really need a good writer to put some material together for me. :-)

  6. One thing that is unique about me is that I am a mediator. I always work hard to make sure that people get along and see the other side of a sitatuation. I have had to overcome a lot in my life and I don't like to see people getting mad for no reason.

  8. Such an interesting post and what a great question you pose this week. Hmm, what makes me unique? It could be my passion for hedgehogs but I guess friends would say its my habit of giving everything names - from all of my plants to Madge (wheelchair) I give everything a name.

    1. Hi Petty, LOL! Lizzy always makes fun of me because I like to impose personalities onto inanimate objects all the time. I mean, why wouldn't you? It adds a bit of excitement. Great to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by! ~ F

  9. What an interesting question! :) This would be so great for character development. I really need to do this with each character in my fantasy series :)

What makes me unique . . . well, maybe that I'm still finding out lol

  10. If I see anything that looks in danger of being squashed on the road (slugs, snails, worms, frogs) I have to stop, pick it up and put it back on the bank out of harm's way. It’s a good job we live in a small village – try doing that on a motorway! Does that make me unique?

    1. Hi Barbara, Yeah! A kindred spirit. I am constantly saving things from being squashed on the road, and will be late getting someplace because of it. I remember a few years ago, I was on my way to Easter at my Aunt's house and there was a snapping turtle crossing the road. I stopped traffic, had to finagle a bit in my dress (which was trashed afterwords) to get him to not bite me, people are honking, I'm totally stressed because the turtle was pretty angry- it all went on for a few minutes, until, thankfully, a woman came over with a towel and we were able to cover the turtle and move it to safety. I am a complete maniac about bugs as well. Drives my family and friends crazy- lol! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, and keep on doing what you do because all life is precious. ~ f

I'm same as my ancestors, yet,
    different, you see.
