Are They the Deliverers?

Eric has never talked to birds before, nor has he heard of a land called Calendria.  All of that changes when an ordinary campout changes his life forever. After an owl named Stig asks him to go on an adventure with him, Eric is intrigued and agrees to go. They travel through a door to the Hallway of Worlds and the Gatekeeper gives them their assignment.  From there Stig and Eric enter a new world and meet a member of Calendria, Kate. She is convinced that they are “The Deliverers” from an old legend and that they have been sent to help her people get away from Sharky, a pirate that has been making life difficult for her village. Are Eric and Stig going to be able to save Kate and her family and friends from Sharky and the pirates?  Are they “The Deliverers”?  What happens when Eric has to overcome his worst fears?  Read this action-packed adventure book to find out!

I just finished reading The Deliverers:  Sharky and the Jewel by Gregory Slomba and it was a wonderful story.  I liked Eric because he was smart and braver than he knew. He also had to rely on friends to help him solve the problems that arise and this seemed very real to me. The action started right in the first chapter and continued to pick up from there.  I think that kids in 4th grade through 8th grade would really like this book- older kids and adults would also find it to be an interesting read!  A story that includes pirates, talking animals, dwarfs, and ancient magic will appeal to anyone that enjoys The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings.  A great way to introduce kids to the fantasy genre!

Has anyone else read The Deliverers:  Sharky and the Jewel by Gregory Slomba?  What are your favorite fantasy books?

Happy Reading!

  1. Ooh, this sounds good. I like finding great MG reads. My favorite MG series is the Percy Jackson series. Love those books! I re-read parts of them all the time. They have post-its stuck everywhere. :)

  2. This is always a good and sure-fire plot formula: the protagonist/stranger who saves the fantasy world. Reminds me of avatar.
