The Missing Link...

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is a unique book about an orphan named Hugo living in a Paris train station. Told though a series of pictures and words, the reader will be intrigued right from the start. The story is revealed a little bit at a time and there is much to keep you reading! You will find out that Hugo is a boy who has a secret that cannot be revealed. Unfortunately, he is also known as a thief, and he is on a quest to solve a mystery. When Hugo’s life intersects with a young girl and the toy maker he has been spying on, his life will be changed forever. Will he be able to solve the mystery? Will he have to pay the price for his stealing?

This is a story that should not be missed! Anyone from 8- 100 would love this book and someone younger than 8 would enjoy it if it was read to them (or with them). I was captivated by the beautiful illustrations and spent a lot of time pouring over each one. Looking closely will help you pick up clues in the masterful black and white drawings. Although the book looks really long at first, remember that it has pictures, so it isn’t as intimidating as it seems! The writing style is fluid and the characters are well developed.

I saw that this movie is coming out and it looks fabulous. Then I saw the book and loved the cover and summary. I am so glad I read it and let this magical story play in my mind. I look forward to seeing the movie and seeing if it can compete with the book- but more importantly I am anxious to reading other books by this amazing author/illustrator!

Has anyone else read The Invention of Hugo Cabret? Or read anything else by Brian Selznick? What did you think?

Happy Reading-
~L

  3. Hi! I've read this book perhaps a year or two ago and I couldn't put it down. The illustrations and the storyline are amazingly cinematic and with such incredible depth as well. One of my all-time favorites. I like the fact that Scorcese is directing the film, can't wait for it as well.

I'm intrigued by Wonderstruck. We still don't have that in our libraries (sad face). Hopefully in the next month or so I get to read it. :)
