Monday's Riddle: A Sparkly At Best...

Hello, Riddlers! Can you guess our theme this week? I have two that are very special to me. They're good reminders to be yourself. ; ) ~F

A fancy spot, close to your heart. Hanged together, but apart. A reminder for you, a memory past, something special that can last. It could be anything, but sparkly at best; conveniently located center chest. While you're you, it's your style. At this thing, you shall smile.

What am I referring to? Stop by Wednesday for the answer.

I gave you a clue!

Lizzy's Review: A Plane Full of Babies?

Jonah has always known he was adopted, and his parents have told him what a special day it was when he came into their lives. But when Jonah starts receiving mysterious letters saying he's one of the missing and someone is coming for him, he begins to worry. Is someone looking for him because they gave him up for adoption? He isn’t sure what the letters mean, but he knows he can’t tell his parents about them. When Johan finds out his new neighbor, Chip, was also adopted and that he has been getting the same letters things become a whole lot weirder. Jonah’s sister, Katherine, is right on top of it and can't wait to help crack this mystery. A family trip to the local FBI office leads to some unique events and more questions. A list of witnesses and survivors is discovered and the kids don't know what it could possibly mean. As they begin to investigate things become very dangerous. One of the witnesses reveals that Chip and Jonah were found thirteen years earlier on a plane, only the plane had no pilot and was only full of babies. Now, people are looking for Jonah and Chip. Who is trying to find them? Does this have anything to do with the babies on the plane? Will anyone help them? You will be just as anxious as Chip and Jonah to figure out what is going on!

I have read many books by Margaret Peterson Haddix, so I was looking forward to starting The Missing series. Found intrigued me and I was interested in the mystery. It was fun trying to figure out everything on my own and the story moved at a quick pace. I think this book will appeal to kids in fourth grade and up who like books that involve science fiction and suspense. The three main characters are different enough that they have their own unique personalities, but close enough in age that kids will easily be able to relate to them. This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I know I'll have to get the second book to see what happens. Luckily, I think most of the series is out now so if there are any more cliffhangers I won't have to wait long before I find the answers!

Has anyone else read Found? Or have you read another book by Margaret Peterson Haddix? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Happy Reading!
~L

Answer to Monday's Riddle: Babies All Around...

Excellent guessing, Riddlers! Friday, Lizzy's review will bring home the baby, so stay tuned! See you all around the book block. ; ) ~ F

The starting line in this place, here you'll find another face. An unknown you come to being, open eyes forever seeing. At this stage, you are new, there is nothing much to do. Eat, sleep, watch the scene, be a part of the living dream. Voices coo, vibrations sound, colors swim through sky and ground. Reflecting on this circle spin, here is where you've once been. Words had yet to take on meaning, the goal this time was finish weaning.

What are you? Answer: A baby!

Extra! Extra! The Begonia House in headlines!
Secrets revealed by the Ridgefield Press

Jessica Haight, left, with writing partner Stephanie Robinson

A supposedly haunted house owned by one of Ridgefield’s former police chiefs, John Haight, has become the basis for a middle school-level juvenile novel published by Random House.

“The Secret Files of Fairday Morrow,” about a detective girl who moves to the big, old spooky house with lots of local lore surrounding it, is currently available.

Jessica Haight, 42, of New Fairfield, who by day is the central registrar for the Enchanted Garden school of the arts for children in Ridgefield, co-authored the book with writing partner Stephanie Robinson, 41, of Naugatuck, using Google Documents Share based on her experiences as a child in her grandfather’s creaky old home...

In other news, Fairday's Drawing Contest entry date has been extended to June 17th. Set your imagination free!

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

Ben and Will are twins who get into a lot of trouble together. This is disappointing to their father, the baron, and their mother, the baroness. When they nearly burn down the map room it sends their parents over the edge, and they come up with a plan to split the boys up. Will is going to live with his uncle in the Crags, while Ben is to stay at home at the castle. The two tricksters decide that plan doesn’t work and they switch places. No one is the wiser until it's too late. Unfortunately, this allows Ben to hear his father say some not so nice things about him because he thinks he's talking to Will. Ben stews about it until he gets to the Crags. Once there, his uncle is not very friendly and the place is just as dark and gloomy as he remembered. Luckily, his aunt is kind to him. But nothing is as exciting as the secret stairwell he finds with a mysterious mirror. It's clear the mirror holds special magic, and it tells Ben things about his twin brother. Should Ben listen to what the mirror says? Will it help him get the power he deserves? What will happen when Will visits? You don't have a magic mirror, so you’ll be turning the pages like I was!

I was very excited to read The Mirror’s Tale by P.W. Catanese. I enjoy fairytales and twists on them are usually a lot of fun. I knew the story of Snow White, so I was curious to read about her great-great grandchildren. Ben and Will’s characters were developed in a way that I liked them both and felt sorry for them for different reasons. The mirror really worried me! This book was definitely a page turner, and I would recommend it to kids in fourth grade and up who enjoy fantasy stories. The twist on Snow White will appeal to boys and girls. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Has anyone else read The Mirror’s Tale? Or have you read another book by P.W. Catanese? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
