Fairday's Riddle: It's Shocking!

 

Hello, Riddlers! All around us this lurks unseen, until it suddenly is. Can you guess the answer? ~F  

Opposing forces generate me. I am that by which you see. Often shocking, raising your hairs, I'm all crackling light and sparkling flares. Systems of ions pushed into motion; spinning fast, causing commotion. Copper lines, and I'm chained to a tower. When I'm free, you'll feel my power. 

What am I? Stop by Friday for the answer
