The DMS Wants to Know!

Monday's Riddle opened up the topic of siblings, setting up a fun week! It's Summertime here in New England, and it's been pretty hot outside. Lizzy cooled us all off a bit with her review of The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies and on Top of the Heap we told you about our favorite story broods. Today is special, because we want to share with you a little about our lovely siblings.

Fairday: My sister, Margo, truly is something else! Ever since she came into our family, there has been a whole new energy that lives in our house. Even the spookiness of our new place can't measure up to the brilliance inside her head. She still believes that she is really a firecracker, which she picked up from the story, My Clearest Me by Gueh Yanting, Claudine.

I can sit and watch her play for hours. It's so interesting to see how she interacts with things- what she actually sees them as, I have no idea. It's like the other night, I was sitting watching TV and, all of the sudden, her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Fazzy, came flying into the room. It was followed by a completely nude Margo wearing my dad's work shoes. She clomped in, laughed hysterically, grabbed Mr. Fazzy, and then bolted. I was left sitting on the couch in utter astonishment. It was hilarious. I love having a little sister. She's only 2 1/2 now, but someday, we will be able to share our secrets and stories, and that will be truly special. I'm sure she will be in the DMS, and will most likely be running the show as soon as she can manage a backpack.

Lizzy: I love my brother, and we have such a great relationship. It is only natural to have some competition or sibling rivalry. Recently my aunt was visiting from Colorado. We were laughing and talking about how we all use the word “like” too much. When you start to listen to it, like is a very strange word. Aunt Sophie told my brother, Mark, and I that if we could go 24 hours without saying “like” that she would give us $500 dollars. My uncle was in the car and she said it went for him, too!  I was so excited and was already thinking about how I would spend my money. I was so eager that I started asking questions and of course, used the word “like” in one of my questions!  Mark was determined to beat me. He made it through the rest of the night and I started getting stressed out that he would get his bragging rights and never let me hear the end of it. With only 8 hours left to go he couldn’t resist reminding Aunt Sophie that he was getting close to winning. I believe his exact words were, “I still haven’t said “the l word”, but I almost did when I was like la-.” My aunt and I burst out laughing and the bet was off. I don’t know who was more relieved, my aunt because she didn’t have to pay him, or me because he couldn’t hold it over my head forever that he went 24 hours without saying “like” and won $500. This was definitely one of the most fun competitions we have ever had, and I know there will be more to come.  ~L

The DMS wants to know: What funny stories do you have about your siblings?

We told you ours. Now, let's hear yours!

  1. Funny stories!

My brother and I have so many moments together it is hard to pick. One day we were rough housing on the steps and accidentaly made a hole in the wall and wallpaper. My stepdad was very calm and we had to help re-wallpaper the stairs the next weekend.

  2. The challenge about the word like sounds hilarious. I don't know if I could do it. Like shows up a lot more often then I thought. My funniest times are when we are fighting and my mom says what is going on and we both say- nothing. Even though something is going on.

    1. Hi Flex, It is amazing how many times "like" comes up- it's funny when you start to pay attention and listen for it. Great to hear from you! ~ F

  3. Love the stories. My son and daughter were close from day one. When he was a baby her voice and attention were more effective than his "binky." Now they are in their 20's and still maintain BFF status. I remember when my brother convinced me to sneak into abandoned rabbit cages in a field behind our house. Unfortunately it had rained for quite a few days and our weight made the cages sink in the mud. We were trapped and had to holler for our parents. Did I mention we were still in our Sunday school clothes? My backside still remembers the consequences of our adventure.

  5. My sister and I would sometimes play twenty questions late (or early)into the night. It would get to a point where everything we said made us laugh. We'd get so tired we'd get giggly. Then we'd get so giggly we'd get loud. That's when my mother would come in and tell us quietly but firmly to stop giggling and go to sleep it was keeping Mom and Dad awake. I remember how we struggled to settle down after she left, little eruptions of giggles and snorts coming out from under our sheets.

    1. Hi Bish, That's so fun- and twenty questions is a fabulous game when you playing with someone who is on the same level, and is okay with whatever the questions are. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story with us : ) ~ F

  6. Is it bad that I can't think of any funny stories? I have 3 brothers and am the only girl, so I really wasn't that close to them. Once a bookworm, alwaysa bookworm I guess..

  7. Love your stories. I have two brothers that I love immensely. One brother is like the funny one out of us. It was late at night and I go to my room where the lights are off. I hear this hissing sound twice. The first time I screamed and the second time I screamed even louder. I think it was the best scare he has ever given me because the second time he hissed I saw movement and all I could think of was a big black spider coming towards me. I know that was a ridiculous thought but that's what I was thinking.

    1. Hi Adriana, Thanks! Too funny! I have to admit that being scared sometimes is so fun! Lizzy's brother, Mark, is like that- he pops out on her all the time. He has scared the pants off of us many times. When you live with a brother like that, you learn quickly to be on your guard, and fear not the unexpected! Thanks for sharing your story with us! Great to hear from you : ) ~ F

  9. My brother would not take his daily nap unless I read to him!

    Only me!

    Every day!

And it had to be a story about a duck and her babies!

It was called Quack Said Jerusha!

My friends would sit on our front porch and wait for me to finish so we could resume our play!

  10. I do so love this blog! I don't get over as often as I like but I love the way you run it and how you get your readers to interact with you!

Funny story about my sister-She was almost 16 and had blonde hair, we were on vacation and had been swimming in an extremely chlorinated pool at a hotel for two days while my mom worked. She'd also been using Sun-In to streak her hair. The Sun-In streaks turned green. But no one noticed until we were in Virginia and she was in the sun at a rest area. I started laughing at her. (I was three years younger). She shrieked and ran down the hill covering her head. You can imagine how traumatic it was for her at sixteen. It just took a couple of washes to wash out. But I thought it was hilarious!

  12. My sister and I can get hysterical over anything. We are only a few months apart (she's older) and we have always had the same sense of humor. She is my favorite person to watch TV with, and we usually want to watch the same shows. Ever since we were little, we sort of get silly (pinch each other, tell a joke, etc.) during the commercials, and then settle down again once the show starts. I can't do that with anyone else. Fun to share this with you! I enjoy your posts.
