What is in the Night Air?

Twig has lived in the same small town since she was little. She's pretty much invisible, so no one pays any attention to her. Kids know Twig won't come to their birthday parties, nor will she invite them to her house, so it's hard for her to build friendships. She can't invite anybody over or they’d find out about her family secret. When Julia moves in next door, Twig has the first hope of a real friend. Unfortunately, Twig’s mother forbids her from spending time with Julia because of an old curse on the family. It isn’t easy since Julia wants to spend time with Twig too. Plus, there's a mystery around town. Graffiti is showing up with a message that makes the townsfolk believe a monster comes out at night to threaten them. Can a spell someone put out into the universe 200 years ago be reversed? What will happen if everyone finds out what or who is in the attic? Is there really a monster that comes out at night? You'll have to read this enchanting tale to find out.

Nightbird by Alice Hoffman is a story that should not be missed. I first heard about it from Joanne and her review on her blog: My Brain on Books. And I'm so glad I did! I loved Twig instantly and wanted to be friends with her. We would have such fun climbing trees and exploring the woods. I adored how wise beyond her years she is, and how she pays attention to all the details around her. Twig has such a kind heart and watching her friendship blossom with Julia brought a smile to my face. The different elements of the story made me feel like I was reading folklore or a fairy tale. The writing is beautiful and the themes are strong. I highly recommend this book, and if you have a chance to listen on audio the reader does an amazing job.

Has anyone else read Nightbird? Or have you read another book by Alice Hoffman? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Happy reading!

  8. Thank you. I have read most of Alice Hoffman's work - but haven't come across this one. Your description made me think of her Practical Magic which I haven't reread in years. Too long.

  12. I've never read any of her books that I know of...but wow...she's 63? If so, and if the headshot of her out there online is recent, she looks amazing for her age.

  21. Thanks for the review. I read this book. Although I love Alice Hoffman, I didn't think she quite nailed middle grade. But I loved the mystery, the setting she wrote so well, and the way the past and future wove together. I wrote a review on Goodreads about it.

  22. I have this on my to-read shelf but have always thought it was a bit of a heavier sort of story so I've stayed away. Silly me. Will pick it up once I'm done with my current MG reads. I bought an Alice Hoffman ebook recently ~ The Red Garden. Looking forward to getting to it. Hope you ladies have been well!
