The Search for the Rim of Heaven Begins!

Firedrake and the other dragons are alarmed when they find out that humans are encroaching upon their land. They have been safe from the pesky humans for millions of years, although they have been pushed farther and farther away from the spaces they enjoy. Now their only hope is that the Rim of Heaven, a haven for dragons, truly exists. Unfortunately, the old dragon who tells Firedrake about it doesn't seem to have much information. Still, Firedrake is determined and sets off on his quest with his faithful Brownie, Sorrell. Along the way they meet a small human child named Ben who helps them with the first piece of their puzzle. Without his assistance they may not have ever gotten started and because of this they offer Ben a chance to come with them. The three must be careful on their journey because there is a dangerous golden dragon named Nettlebrand, who is out thirsting for lots and lots of dragon blood. Their journey will not be easy and they will encounter friends and foes, bad weather, wrong turns, and confusing information they must interpret correctly for all to work out. Does the Rim of Heaven even exist? Are there still dragons in a haven waiting and living life? Will Nettlebrand get his wish? You'll have to read this fantastical adventure to find out.

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funk proved to be a wonderful escape. I loved each of the characters and their unique personalities. Sorrell had so much spunk, Ben was kindhearted and Firedrake was calm and determined. The way that they interacted with each other seemed natural and made me laugh out loud. I was lucky enough to listen to the audio version of this 500 page book, which was read completely by Brendan Fraser. I was very impressed with all the different voices he did and the personality he helps give each character. I can still hear their voices! I was sad when the story came to an end. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy elements of the supernatural. Cornelia Funk is quite the storyteller. I have read a couple of her books and look forward to reading more in the future.

Has anyone else read Dragon Rider? Or have you read another book by Cornelia Funk? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

  17. Oops and humble apologies for taking this long to actually get here. I shall blame it on waiting for Windows 10 to install.

"Dragon Rider" does seem like a good, fun read. Not familiar with it. I shall, however, take my usual liberty as share your post via all those social networking sites.

  20. I've seen several of Cornelia's books at my library. It's interesting that, just like a human on his quest for haven, dragons also encounter villainous dragons and kind humans whom they thought of as enemies. I like the sound of Ben very much!

  21. I'm constantly surprised by voice actors reading books. They are so good at reading characters so that they don't blend together.
A book where most of the main characters are dragons? That would be a first for me, but I'm sure in the hands of Cornelia Funke I won't regret it.

    1. Adriana- I was surprised when I realized who was reading the audio- but I guess a benefit is that actors get very into the characters/voices and they were all different. :) If you enjoy Cornelia Funke- then I think you will love Dragon Rider. ~L
