I was
surprised by Margo's choice this week, but that doesn't mean it wasn't
fascinating! The cover of Glow: Animals
with their Own Night-Lights by W.H. Beck will make you stop and
take notice. Just look at that angler fish!
Once you
dive into this book, the pictures help teach readers about the different
kinds of animals and plants that use bio-luminescence. Margo loved trying to say
it, but it came out more like “Luminess”. After you learn the definition, you'll be
introduced to animals deep in the sea (thank goodness they are so far down I will never encounter them), in the woods, and even in the air. I had no idea that fireflies aren’t actually flies! I definitely
learned a lot. I'd love to go where there are dinoflagellates
making the water sparkle.
If you're looking for an interesting way to learn about plants and animals, than I highly recommend this non-fiction picture book. It's great for young kids or older readers.

DeleteHi DMS - it will certainly amuse many a person; when I was a kid I remember seeing the 'fireflies' in the hazel nut bushes at night ... they've always interested me - and then reading that soldiers in the First World War used them to read by ... amazed me even more. Incredible creatures and all those using bioluminescence ... nature is quite extraordinary ... cheers Hilary

DeleteAlthough I don't read a lot of nonfiction now, as I a child I used to love it. I would drink in the images and what information I could read and really understand. I think it helped me grow a lot!
ReplyDeleteOlivia- I bet all that nonfiction reading growing up did help you grow. This is a great book since it is a picture book and it is a fast read for most adults and kids. I know I learned a lot! :) ~F

DeleteWhat a fascinating book. It sounds perfect for a science lesson at school. (I taught science and we had a unit on animals.) I remember "lightning bugs" we called them. We'd chase them around the yard. They were so pretty.
