Top of the Heap!

Our first Top of the Heap post December 29th, 2011!
Happy Reading : )

Lizzy and I thought for the new year it would be fun to keep in the spirit of Holiday Tales and transition it into weekly posts about some of our favorite stories, poems, music, movies, etc. Just something fun to talk about and share with all of you.

This week's top of the heap: Shel Silverstein!

My favorite poem of all time...Lazy Jane ~ F
Best Shel Silverstein Poem...Sick ~ L

SICK
"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more--that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut--my eyes are blue--
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Does anyone else have a favorite Shel Silverstein poem or any other poem that you would like to share with us?

  1. I don't have a favourite poem by Shel Silverstien but I love his books of poetry they're all wonderful! I'd have to say my favourite poems of all time are The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe and Innocence of Auguries by William Blake.

    1. Kimberly- Shel Silverstein has so many wonderful and fun poems. It is hard to pick a favorite! Great choice with The Raven. I haven't read the other one you mentioned- but I will have to read it! ~Stephanie

  2. I've never read Shel Silverstein. I thought the poems would be too childish but apparently I'm wrong because I enjoyed both of these poems especially the last one. It's probably the greatest poem I've ever heard. It's The child's poem. Loved it. What books are these from?
I look forward to the new posts coming up (:

    1. Hi Adriana- Shel Silverstein has a way of writing for children and adults at the same time. His poems always make me smile. I believe these are from A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends- two great collections. I also liked his The Missing Piece and The Missing Piece Meets the Big O (both books adults can relate to). Also- if you haven't read The Giving Tree I think you will like it! Happy reading! ~Stephanie

    2. Thanks! I'm pretty sure I have both of those books. They are my brothers books. I've gotten The Missing Piece recommended to me already by another blogger. It's looks really great. I have read The Giving Tree like a hundred years ago. I remember it being very sad for a picture book.
