The queen has decided that it is time for her son to meet his bride and invites all of the eligible females in the kingdom to attend the grand ball. Jo and her family have been working day and night to get the palace ready for the big event. Of course, Jo isn’t invited. Although she feels a little snubbed, she is happy that she and her relatives will at least get to watch the events of the ball unfold after they get off of work. They are all impressed by the beautiful girl who arrives a bit late and seems to capture the prince’s attention. Unfortunately, Jo has to leave before the ball is over because she has a long walk home and doesn’t get to see how the night ends. On the dark and dusty road she is shocked when she stumbles upon a strange slipper that seems to be made of glass. When Jo takes the slipper home she has no idea that her life is about to change! The annoying hum coming from the shoe is just the start of a puzzle that Jo will need to figure out in order to set things right. Powerful magic is involved and it won’t be possible to simply return the shoe to its rightful owner. Jo’s journey will take her and her brother, Ron, to the kingdom of Ould. Along the way they will encounter some interesting characters, Locke and Verne. Can Ron and Jo trust Locke and Verne? What is it about the shoes that cause such a reaction in animals and people? Will they be able to return the shoes and make it back home safely? Read this twisted fairy tale to answer those questions and more.
I enjoyed The Other Slipper by Kenechi Udogu because it took a classic fairy tale and put a spin on it that had me guessing throughout the book.I love that Jo was an onlooker at the ball and that she ended up with one of the glass slippers that I have read about my whole life. The magical elements of the story will appeal to those who like fantasy.I think kids between third and eighth grade will fall into this book if they like fairy tales, wizards, and mystery. The three main characters are all different, so readers will be able to relate to one or more of them. It is so fun to read a book based on a story you know so well and to have surprises along the way.I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading another book by this author.
Has anyone else read The Other Slipper by Kenechi Udogu? Or another book by Kenechi Udogu?
Petty- I wasn't sure how I would feel about this one- but it is so different from the original that it was unique. In a way Cinderella was just a place to start Jo's story. :) ~F
I'm usually very cautious when it comes to faerie tale retellings, but I'm intrigued by the premise of this one. "Messing" with the original story is the expected, boring thing; letting the original story have its integrity and writing a spin-off that fits right next to it takes real imagination! Thanks for your review, L! =)
JMJ- This version is definitely a spin-off. It takes the idea of Cinderella and tells a story that is totally different from the original fairy tale. Cool idea for sure! ~F
This was my first book by Kenechi Udogu- but I believe she has three books and is thinking of writing a sequel to The Other Slipper. Happy reading, Barbara!
Heidi- If you like fairy tale retellings then I think you will like this one. I love fairy tales and I am always curious to read retellings to see how they are. I learned a lot more about the glass slippers! :) ~F

Still not too sure about the updating of these classic stories. Still, at least it wasn't 'zombiefied'.
