The DMS Wants to Know!

What a spell-binding week we've had! Monday's riddle brewed up a bubbling cauldron with the topic of great witches from stories. Lizzy cast a spell on us with her review of  The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, which showed us a more sinister side to swimming in the 1600's. And, on Top of the Heap we told you about our favorite witches. Today, we want to know about the witches that you find to be enchanting!

    This one is so easy...it's the witches from Deborah Harkness's books...especially Discovry Of Witches!!!

    Which witch, you ask? Did you know that there is a Middle Grade children's novel called Which Witch?, written by Eva Ibbotson? ;-)

    I haven't really thought about my favourite witches, though. Hermione, of course, would make the list. And I remember thinking Roald Dahl's Witches is an excellent Horror novel for children. There's also Jennifer from Jennifer, Hecate, MacBeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth, who claims to be a witch.
    And all the witches in the aforementioned Ibbotson book are hilarious. =) Do movies count? If so, then the characters of The Craft are all shoo-ins.

    Now that I've had more time to think about it . . . I suppose my favourite witch is the one in Hansel and Gretel. Yes, it's totally "old school," but I love her gingerbread trap and its parallel to her own cannibalism . . . and to her demise.

      JMJ- I have never read Which Witch by Ibbotson- but I may have to give it a try! You mentioned so many great books with awesome witches. I think it is fantastic that you settled on a classic. The witch from Hansel and Gretel is crafty for sure! ~L

    The Littlest Witch (by Jeanne Massey). That's the book that popped into my brain. I guess because it's the only witch book I loved enough to have read (or been read to) 100's of times.

    Oh, and I'm following you by GFC. Great question, must try to find my copy for my daughter or buy one.

    Oops, left this response below but I'll repeat it - I love the witches in The Witches of Eastwick, and in Practical Magic. Any good witch.
    Also looking forward to reading Marva Dasef's Bad Spelling witches. You should check out her magical YA series. :)

    I only know Diana, from the novel A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Well, that is if she is considered as one.

    Besides Harry Potter and his friends :), I think Sophie from Hex Hall. I'm just finishing the first book and she is so witty and likeable! :)
    And I have to mention Baba Yaga, she is just the witch! ;)

    As far as I'm concerned you can't better the witches from the Wizard of Oz. The line I'm melting is one of the best ever.

    Hermione Granger is a favorite - she's smart, loyal and knows how and when to break are rule or two when necessary. But I also like Mildred from Worst Witch - does anyone even remember her, anymore?

    The White witch from The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe and (like Alex) Mildred Hubble the worst student at Miss Cackle’s academy for witches (The worst witch by Jill Murphy).

    Of course Hermione ranks right near the top. The other would be Samantha of Bewitched! I loved that show as a child and enjoyed the mischief she created along with the rest of her magical family. Poor Darren, he endured so much! Hilarious viewing, for sure!
