Could You Handle Your Savvy?

Being special is something the Beaumont family knows all about. Their family has been keeping a magical secret for years. If folks knew about the odd talents they each possessed either they wouldn’t believe their eyes or they would lock them up for being crazy. That is why when Mississippi Beaumont, better known as Mibs, is about to turn thirteen she is both thrilled and scared. After all, thirteen is the age that the Beaumont’s supernatural powers surface, and one never knows what that will entail. Grandpa Bomba can move mountains, her brother, Rocket, is capable of creating electric storms, and her brother, Fish, can create winds like a hurricane. What will Mibs be able to do? As she wonders and worries her mom is finishing the birthday party preparations so everything will be just so on the special day. When her father is involved in a terrible accident the night before the party, Mibs can think of nothing else besides getting to the hospital to make sure that her dad is alright. Unfortunately, her mom and brother have left her at home and she ends up at a birthday party run by the pastor’s wife, Miss Rosemary. Instead of being happy, the festivities only make Mibs more on edge that her savvy will show up in front of a whole bunch of people, making a scene. Sneaking out of the church party, she hops into the back of a salesman’s bus. Mibs thinks she has come up with the perfect plan to get to her father, but her plan is thrown off track when the bus heads in the opposite direction. She is accompanied by unexpected and unwanted guests. Will Mibs make it to the hospital to see her dad? When her savvy reveals itself, will she be able to control it? You will have to read this book to find out where the bus takes them and what Mib’s savvy is when it comes.

I think anyone who has ever dreamed of having a special gift or talent will enjoy Savvy by Ingrid Law. In a way, getting your savvy has to do with finding out a way that makes you unique from everyone else around you. We are all special, and a savvy is just an extension of that quality. The book is filled with interesting characters and the main character, Mibs, is someone I could easily relate to for a variety of reasons. She feels a bit out of place with some of her classmates because her family is different, which I think many kids can identify with. Mibs likes to spend time with her quirky family and their interactions will make you laugh. Reading about her family will keep you entertained and I am sure you will wonder what your savvy would be, if you were lucky enough to get one. Would you be able to fly? Read minds? Move objects at will? The possibilities are endless! This is a great book for people 9 and up to enjoy. Take a journey with the Beaumonts and imagine a world where anything is possible.

Has anyone else read Savvy by Ingrid Law? Or another book by this author? What did you think?
Happy Reading! ~L

  1. I've read Savvy and loved it! It's also very popular at the elementary school library where I volunteer. It's paranormal for the younger set! I haven't had a chance to read Scumble, the next one in the series.

    1. There are some touching spots in the book. Scumble was good, too! It is from a 13 year old boy's POV- so it is fun to see things from that perspective!
