We're featuring rhyming children's stories as a part of Angie Karcher's #RhyPiBoMo writing challenge in April. This week we clued you in on an excellent poet. Here are two of our favorite Shel Silverstein poems... enjoy!
My favorite poem of all time...Lazy Jane ~ F
Best Shel Silverstein Poem...Sick ~ L
SICK
"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more--that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut--my eyes are blue--
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Ohmygosh, I love Shel Silverstein. My children always bring home his poetry books and we all laugh out loud. I've read the ones above. They are sing-songy and have wonderful rhythm. Thanks for sharing these.

DeleteThese were cute to read. Growing up with the kids, we didn't do much Shel Silverstein. Not sure why. We did a lot of Doctor Seuss though.

DeleteThe peanut butter sandwich one was a favorite as child. My kids love The Dirtiest Man and Hungry Mungry. So funny!

DeleteI've never heard these poems until you introduced them here... I laughed at the first one and second one made me smile as it reminded me of my oldest daughter and her never ending excuses for not going to school... xox

DeleteThese are priceless. I have his Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic books. The Crocodile's Toothache is fun, but so are the others. Can't think of a special one.

DeleteI like the form of the first one but the poem itself could've been much wittier and smarter with clever and sweet rhymes, methinks.

DeleteThe Lazy Jane poem really reminded me of the kind of poetry I liked to read back in the day. Sometimes I miss it - with the fun drawings and also the formatting meaning something as well. I need more poetry like that these days as well!
