Lucy hears noises coming from inside the walls of her big, old house. Her family has something to say about them, but no one believes it's wolves, because then it would be over. Everyone knows that, according to her parents and brother. Maybe rats or bats, but definitely not wolves. Lucy, however, is certain that's exactly what's causing the ruckus, and she's scared by the idea of "it" being over. What could that mean? What happens when wolves come out of the walls?
Margo was a little nervous about reading The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman when we pulled it off the shelf, but she put on her brave face and snuggled up to listen. This is a fun book to read out loud, and the illustrations are interesting and unique. They set a spooky tone and add a quirky flavor to the story. We live in the Begonia House, which is also big and old, and it's always creeping with strange sounds, so it was easy for Margo to relate with Lucy about no one believing what she knew to be true. After we finished the book, Margo told me she wasn't the least bit surprised when it turned out the pig-puppet had the most sense. :)
Has anyone else read The Wolves in the Walls? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
Happy reading!

My sister was telling me yesterday that her granddaughter lost her pet (venomous) snake; it was eventually found inside the cavity wall in her bedroom. Her mum has now insisted the vivarium be kept locked – I think I would be moving home. Reading about wolves in the walls reminded me of the conversation. I’ve not read it, but it sounds like an interesting and fun read. Have a wonderful weekend. x
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, How scary! I'd take wolves in the walls over snakes- lol! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story with us. :) ~ F
DeleteI've not read this, but it sounds intriguing. Reminds me of the time my son's tarantula got out of its aquarium. We hunted high and low for it, and finally found it on the shelf right behind the cage. Not sure where it ventured, but we were very glad to find it!
ReplyDeleteHi Karen, I'm glad you found it too! Barbara was telling us about lost snakes- always a bit unsettling when they can't be accounted for. :) Thanks for sharing! ~ F
DeleteThe art style reminds me of The Stinky Cheese Man. My kids would probably totally geek out on this book.

DeleteA lot of kids like to be scared by books and movies so I'm sure this one would appeal to most of them. Perfect for Halloween. I think I had so many real scares in my childhood that I still avoid anything that would frighten me more. But for those that like to be...this sounds like a great book.
ReplyDeleteHi Anna Maria, I love scary stories, and I always have! Especially when they're cleverly written. Thanks for stopping by. :) ~ F
DeleteMy old house makes many strange noises too. I wonder where the idea of wolves in the walls came from. I'd heard Gaiman wrote a couple of picture books. Good to know that they're cute. :) I'm glad Margo enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHi Molly, Cool! Me too- I've never heard of that before this story, but Neil is the master of coming up with new twists on ideas and stories. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts! ~ F
DeleteI was just telling hubby this morning that having neighbors upstairs is the best excuse for any strange noises :) Growing up in a big old house with all kinds of creeping noises definitely has made me wary of them...and kind of enjoy them, too, if I'm honest!
ReplyDeleteHi Meradeth, Lol- it is! I love big, old creepy houses. I just can't get enough of them! Thanks for stopping by. :) ~ F
