Sophie is captured late one night, as can happen
when one can’t fall asleep. Luckily for her, the giant who took her is not like
the rest of his kind, for he is kind and gentle (a little on the short side too,
at nearly 24 feet). He doesn’t want to eat Sophie and doesn’t dine on children
(or any “human beans”). The BFG, as he comes
to be known, eats veggies and a fizzy drink which cause him to “whizzpop”. Although he is a giant, he has a heart of
gold and enjoys giving kids pleasant dreams, which he stores and blows into
their rooms while they are dozing. Sophie
and the BFG become fast friends. When Sophie finds out that the other giants
have a plan to devour lots of other children, she begs the BFG to help her save
them. She has a plan, but it won’t work if she tries it alone. Will Sophie and
the BFG be able to save the unsuspecting humans? Will the other giants find out what they are
up to? Is it really possible for a giant
and a human child to be friends? You
will have to read this book to find out!
I have read most of Roald Dahl’s books, and I enjoyed
The BFG. The main characters are easy
to relate to for different reasons. I appreciated the BFG's sensitivity and
Sophie’s determination. I loved all of
the fun made up words throughout the book. There are lots of quirky details,
which I have come to expect from this author. I found myself laughing out loud as I pictured some of the scenes. I
think this book would appeal to kids in third grade and up (younger kids would
enjoy having it read to them). The BFG
has a way of talking that can take some getting used to, but once you get the
hang of it- his personality pops off the pages. I liked the themes in this book
about good and evil, and that friendships can happen where we least expect
them. This was another reminder that we
shouldn’t judge books or people by their covers and that we should laugh often!

DeleteI think I have read everything by him...including a weird one called The Enormous Crocodile...I think that was by him. My second graders loved it!

DeleteIt's been more than two decades since I read The BFG to my kids! I love Roald Dahl, and his children's books inspired me to become a children's author. Can't wait till my grandkids are old enough for me to read this to them!

DeleteI can't believe I haven't read a Roald Dahl book yet even though I own three and Matilda is one of my favourite movies. I love the quote and the writing sounds wonderfully fun. The themes and messages this books sends are great as well. :)

DeleteI don't think I've read The BFG since my niece and nephew now 23 and 20 were little. Hopefully with two great-nephews (3 years and 3 months and 7 months) I'll be remedying this soon.

DeleteWhat!? Haha! I can't believe that's what The BFG is about. I never knew there was giants in any of Roald Dahl's books but this sounds really good. I've read Fantastic Mr. Fox by him and another lesser known book I think called The Giraffe, the Pelly, and me? Something like that... He has a great imagination so I'm not surprised you enjoyed this one. Thanks for letting me know about The BFG!

DeleteI'm ashamed. I have this title on my to-read shelf forever but still haven't gotten to it. I like that this giant gives pleasant dreams. I'll check out the book and share it with a student I know would love to read this. I have read Matilda and a R.D. adult short story collection.

DeleteHeidi- I read Danny the Champion of the World (and just about all of Dahl's other books). Interestingly enough- The BFG is an expansion of Danny the Champion of the World. I wish I reread it first- but I guess I can always read it again now. :) ~L

DeleteI've watched the trailer for this one and can't wait to watch it! I have already watched the cartoon version and loved that as well. Anything Dahl writes is just creative genius and is so inspiring. A personal favourite of mine.
