The DMS Wants to Know!

Monday's Riddle locked us in, and Lizzy's review of The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate gave us a glimpse of life behind bars. Friday, the Character Book Club met over at Read These Books and Use Them! And, it was awesome to find out what Terra, natures spirit, had to say to Anna Green, a young girl from the past. Today, we want to hear from you!

The DMS wants to know: What are your thoughts about keeping animals in captivity? If you were content in a cage, would you want to escape?

  1. I really hate to see animals in captivity. There are some, for sure, that are bred for such, or that can't survive in the wild any longer, but most of the time it just breaks my heart.

    1. Hi Meradeth, For the most part, me too. Mostly I wish everything the space it needs in which to express itself- sometimes cages are necessary though. Thanks for stopping by! ~ F

  2. I suppose animals and humans alike have to emotionally adjust to being confined to a "cage" whether it's in a zoo or a prison...but I'm doubting they ever become "content" out of their natural environment. I have mixed emotions about zoos... feeling sorry for the caged animals and yet happy I can see them up close and personal.

    1. Hi Anna Maria, I agree- there is nothing natural about a cage. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us. : ) ~ F

  3. I do not approve of it. I would never want to be put into a cage.. seems awful.

    1. Hi Carina, Me neither- though inside Jeannie's lamp does look like it would make for a nice vacation- lol. Thanks for stopping by! ~ F

  4. I don't like it! I want animals to live in their natural habitat. We can still learn from them on wildlife reserves.

I'm thinkin' about poor Jeanie. Livin' in that bottle all cooped up. :-) I'd have to break out! *waves*

    1. Hi Robyn, The bottle does look so comfortable though- with a good book or music- maybe just for a little while, and then I would want out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. : ) ~ F

  5. It's a mixed bag. For some species, it's the only way they will survive. As long as it's one of those large, natural habitats, with real room for the animal, I'm all right with it. Small zoos with small cages, circuses, and keeping a wild animal as a pet - then I have a problem.

  6. I have mixed feelings on this! I'm not a fan of caging animals away, but I do think that a lot of zoos now manage to get the balance right and ensure that their animals are as comfortable as they can be and have enough space. But at the same time, I do wonder if some of the animals would be better off in the wild. And yet, I have to admit, that I enjoy visiting zoos. So it's mixed emotions for me...

    1. Hi Sam, The zoos are getting better, and I love seeing all the conservation efforts taking effect around the world. It is always lovely to see a wild animal up close, but I would rather they be free. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us. : ) ~ F

  7. Oh my...this is a difficult one...I live zoos but only the ones with realistic habitats and tons of room!

    1. Hi Patty, At least the zoos that make the effort to keep the animals comfortable are becoming more and more popular. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us! ~ F

  8. Umm... I do like what we learn about animals in zoos and that we try to preserve a species which means that you sometimes have to keep them in captivity but other than that I don't necessarily agree with it. Like with circuses in the past and present. Animals aren't alive to entertain us. Even testing products seems very very wrong...

  9. Hi Heidi, I appreciate the zoos that make the efforts to accommodate the animals so that they're comfortable and in a setting as close to their natural one as possible. Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us. : ) ~ F
