Top of the Heap!

Monday's Riddle opened up the topic of perception, and Lizzy's review of Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen gave us both sides of the story. Friday, Gary Paulsen will be stopping by to tell us a little more about his middle grade book, Hatchet, and Saturday, we always enjoy listening to your point of view on The DMS Wants to Know : )

In the spirit of a teenager, the Young Adult Hop is running wild. Stop by and enter for your chance to win a copy of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, plus a signed hardcover edition of the spooky, new middle grade novel The Secret DMS Files of Fairday Morrow by J. Haight & S. Robinson.

Today, we thought it would be fun to share two fascinating mind games with you. They show you just how much the human brain is hard-wired to alter perceptions.

This week's top of the heap: Excellent Perception Brain Games : )

Fairday: Rotating Silhouette Pirouette

On what leg is the dancer standing? The direction of rotation of silhouettes may be ambiguous. This dancer created by Nobuyuki Kayahara stands on her left leg when she appears to be rotating clockwise, but on her right leg when she appears to rotate counter-clockwise.

Lizzy: Three Streams

Apparent movement of the streams is created by afterimages as our eyes shift to examine the picture.

  3. Amazing! The top and bottom streams appear to be moving, but the middle one appears still - I wonder what that says about me??

    1. Hi Barbara, Hmm... they all move for me- but in different directions. Who knows what the meaning is- the mind is a mystery, though fascinating nonetheless! Thanks so much for popping over to visit us today : ) ~ F

    1. Hi cleemckenzie, That one is my favorite. I can switch it on command now- I had to stare at it for a long time- but if you shift your gaze to her shadow and relax your eyes and brain, she will suddenly spin the other way. I really had her on her toes the other day! My brain was exhausted after our little spinning one way and then the other session. LOL. Magical! Great to hear from you! ~ F
