Monday's Riddle! In or out...

Here's this weeks riddle! Good Luck! ~ F

I can open a place or close empty space; show you behind to put a smile on your face. I am both figurative and literal, solid or thought- to choose to enter, or to think nought. I'm a gateway that you pass through everyday- though you forget how I affect the path that you stay. For, though the scenes change and turn into dreams, I am a constant with you, forever it seems. 

What am I:

Clue: The answer to this riddle is my favorite character's name in NEVERWHERE, by Neil Gaiman

    I'm pitiful when it comes to riddles, but here's my first guess: a mirror.

    One of these days I'll get one right and shock myself.

    I thought mirror first...not copying...then I thought door...but now I think its your brain/mind/imagination...is that three guesses?
