What's the Trouble?

My clock went off at five o' clock
As the sun rose in the skies.
"You ready," my father asked,
Squirting water in my eyes...

Henry Hubble's got some troubles, the first being that he's lost his journal. Lucky for him, you've found it. Of course, he would never want any of his personal, private thoughts to get out, that would be dreadful. Henry has a lot to deal with on a daily basis. As if sitting next to Ronny Bartz, who constantly farts, wasn't bad enough, he has to deal with annoying kids like Arnie Stims. Not only was Halloween a complete disaster when Arnie poked a hole in his Red Sloth costume, but his neighborhood was covered in packing peanuts. Misfortune just seems to follow him. Unfortunately, being named after William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States, doesn't make him any cooler. After a flubbed attempt at expressing himself to Hope Ng, he trips into trouble with Miles, who's likely to make his life miserable. What will happen when his worst nightmare comes true and everyone finds out his secret thoughts? Will he ever be able to face Hope Ng again? What is it about the Red Sloth and his interesting super power? You will have to read Henry's journal to find out for yourself!

I enjoyed Henry Hubble's Book of Troubles by Andy Myer. It reads in a fun, almost graphic novel, way. The illustrations are charming and bring Henry's stories to life. I felt bad for him when things didn't go his way, but still couldn't help laughing at the situations he describes. The characters are colorful, and it was good to see how he dealt with bullies. I also enjoyed the eclectic poetry scattered throughout Henry's journal. I would recommend this book to kids in fourth grade and up who enjoy funny stories and like reading graphic novels.

Has anyone else read Henry Hubble's Book of Troubles? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Happy reading!

  1. I have a passion for diaries and journals. I haven't read this one - and am sure I would love it.
Is it just me or are there many more wonderful books for children now?

  3. I had a feeling there was poetry. I think by default after reading Henry's Journal you started rhyming a little in your description of the summary.
The cover reminds me of Roald Dahl's books. Did you feel the same with the illustrations inside?
I feel really sorry for Henry when people get a hold of his journal. That's every kids worst nightmare. It sounds like Diary of a Wimpy Kid in that it's a journal and it's funny. I look forward to the interview with the author on Friday (:

  4. Whilst I'm not overly fond of the diary format this does appeal if only because Henry sounds like a wonderful character and I feel the illustrations will be great.

  6. This one makes me think of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid when I heard of this. I know I never liked those books but my sister did so maybe I should recommend this one to her! I am a fan of books in diary format though because I like the playful style it's written in.
