The DMS Wants to Know!

To cap off the week, we wanted to share an interesting fact about Dr. Seuss that Lizzy's mom pointed out to us. She told us that his first book Mulberry Street was rejected 27 times before a publisher decided to pick it up. He was told, "Children would not be interested in reading books like this." Lizzy and I couldn't believe that! Dr. Seuss books have traveled the world spreading smiles and good cheer. So, today we want to hear from you guys. What is it about those silly stories that makes them so special?

The DMS wants to know: What is it about the Dr. Seuss stories and characters that you enjoy?

We'll tell you ours, if you tell us yours!

  1. Dr. Suess books have the amazing capacity to impart great wisdom without hitting you over the head with a sledgehammer. They make you laugh and they make you a smarter person than you were before you cracked the cover.
My favourite Dr. Suess quote is: “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.”

    Sage words, to be sure!

    1. I totally agree, Carol Anne! That's what I was going to say- I love the life lesson told through the voices of the silliest characters you can imagine! That's what it's all about anyway. We all love silly, even those who don't admit it : ) Thanks for stopping by! ~ F

  2. They are charming books with life's lessons in them. They rhyme with quirky words that are funny. The characters and stories are unique. I can certainly believe they would have been rejected at first. JK Rowling was also rejected many times until the rep at the publishing house had an 8 year old read the book and tell him if she liked it or not. He signed Rowling and look what happened. Sometimes adults forget fun and charming in their lives.

  3. For me, it's the rhyming and the fact that everything is very simple and creative and down to basics. As others have said, he lays out the truths of life so openly and honestly with so much fun!

I love to come up with silly rhymes, most likely due to the good Doctor's early influence. I think my wife wishes I hadn't read him so much when i was young!

  5. Ah, the wonderful Dr. Seuss! The world would be a much sadder place without his hysterically funny rhymes. Happy belated birthday Dr. Seuss.

  7. What I enjoyed about the Dr. Seuss books is what is on the surface, a whole lot of fun saying aloud silly words, and underneath, a message of concern as in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Dr. Seuss encourages children to become readers and parents to read with their children too. Who doesn't love the funny rhyming words and silly characters?
