The DMS Wants to Know!

Bearded Dragon
The other day, my family and I stopped off at a local pet store in our town. It was a really cool shop! The shelves were packed to the brim with adorable stuff for all sorts of animals. I wandered off into the reptile and fish section while my mom reluctantly followed Margo towards the bunnies and birds. There were numerous aquariums lining one wall, which were housing bearded dragons, anoles, geckos, and fire belly toads. Fancy beta fish goggled back at me from inside their bubbles of water as I watched them through the glass. I came to a bearded dragon and leaned in to get a better look. As I stared into his reptilian eye (which looks so human, it's scary!), he tilted his head up and stared back at me in silence. We stayed like that for a few seconds, both mesmerized, thinking about the other. My mom popped around the corner, tugging desperately on Margo, who clearly had no interest in leaving the bunnies. The spell was broken, and we left the store. Later that night, I was lying in bed, thinking about the strange meeting with the bearded dragon. What was it like to be him? What did I look like to him? Lizzy and I had a great chat the next day about different perspectives and what it would be like to see things from a different point of view. It could be anything; a butterfly, a flower, a rat, a bird, a tree, another person, a mountain...
It was an awesome discussion and we can't wait to hear what you guys think!

If you could see the world from any point of view, what you choose?

We'll tell you ours, if you tell us yours!

  1. I think about this all the time. I think that might be why I feel so bad if anything happens to animals. I always wonder what they think. What its like to be them.
    Thanks for sharing your story:)

  2. I think it would be awesome to have the perspective of a humming bird- it would be so weird to buzz around at that speed- everything would seem completely different- things passing by in slow motion- it really makes you think about time and distance- cool question!

  3. I'd wan't to have a wolf's perspective. I think i would be really cool to be able to be such a good hunter/stalker (as an animal)! Plus, wolves are my favorite animals!

  4. Cool question. Ever since I read A Dog's Life and Gooseberry Park I have always wanted to see what life is like from a dog's point of view. I know I would be an even better owner if I knew!

  5. A cat, a lush tree by the sea, and a sea turtle, perhaps. All three seem to always be watching and observing ...

  6. Most of the time I would like to be a fly on a wall so I could see things that are happening and no one would know I was listening in!

  7. I think this is wonderful. Can you imagine looking eye to eye with a bearded dragon? What a lovely memory to carry with you always.

  8. I'm with Claudine, a sea turtle would be cool. To see things from an underwater perspective would be awesome!

  9. Hmmm- so many great things to see life as. I think I would pick the Moon. It would be a beautiful view of Earth and other parts of the solar system. Of course, when meteors crach into me it won't be much fun!

  10. A butterfly or hummingbird. I'd like to be able to see inside those tiny flowers and taste their nectar. And wouldn't it be wonderful to flit high overhead almost silently?

Loved your encounter with the bearded dragon.

  11. I agree Flex! That's what I would pick too- the moon! Because truly, what would be cooler than watching the earth from that perspective! Not forever, but just for a glimpse...

  13. What unique and wonderful responses! I am not sure why I can't click reply to each of the comments and reply... Hmmm.. Anyway these were fascinating and I think it is cool to see all the different ways we could see life.

I love Flex's answer- I think it wouldn't help put life and problems into perspective to see life from the Moon. If I had to pick something else- it would be a giant sequoia. They are so massive- and they have lived for so long that they have seen a lot of changes!

  14. I’m absolutely terrified of spiders (even the one crawling around on your blog!) so maybe I should try being one for a while. Must be pretty miserable crawling up and down drain pipes and trying to hide from humans!

  15. My daughter especially the younger one love to see the world from different perspectives by pretending to be different animals.
