Read: Ruby Holler

Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech is realistic fiction at its best! Dallas and his sister, Florida, are twins who have had a very rough life. They live in an orphanage run by the Trepids, a couple who can’t stand children. They have a gazillion rules about all the things kids can’t do while they live there. Dallas and Florida get in a lot of trouble because they are always breaking some rule or another. There have been families that have taken Florida and Dallas in for a while, but they are too much trouble for everyone and they end up returning them to the Trepids.

One day an older couple named Tiller and Sairy comes to the orphanage to get two kids to go on vacation with them and they select Dallas and Florida. They bring them back home with them to their home in Ruby Holler. Ruby Holler is out in the middle of nowhere and filled with animals, trees, rivers, hills and all kinds of wonderful outdoor sights. Will Dallas and Florida change their ways? Will Sairy and Tiller be able to handle the destruction that comes with the “terrible two”? Will the Trepids finally be free of Dallas and Florida? I highly recommend this feel good book. I laughed my way through the book and can still hear Florida’s voice ringing in my ears (maggoty, retched, etc.). Lots of short chapters- and although it looks like a long book, it is a really fast read!

Has anyone else read Ruby Holler? Or any other good books by Sharon Creech?

Happy Reading-
~L

  1. I am having trouble commenting- and I am not sure why. Hopefully this one will go through!

Thanks for the review. This sounds like a good book and I saw one of my friend's reading it at the end of school. Now I want to read it. I read The Wanderer by this author. It is a book about a long boat ride and different chapters are told from different characters' points of view. It was cool to see what each character thought and there were some mysterious parts to the book. You would probably like it!

  7. Great review! I read this book and loved it. Florida is hilarious. I also read Granny Torelli Makes Soup by this author. It is funny- the grandma cracked me
up. It is pretty short- you can read it in a day or two. It's about a girl and her best friend, Bailey (a boy). A new girl moves in and the main character gets jealous.
